GIS Frequently Asked Questions:

  • I can't see all of the top toolbar or it looks jumbled, what's up?
GISWEB is meant to be viewed at screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels. It is also best viewed with your browser window maximized to full screen. Also, having your 'Favorites' or 'History' window open simultaneously will impact the viewing of GISWEB.

  • I'm not seeing any information when I use the identify or query tools!
This site intentionally uses 'pop-up' windows to display layer information. This is to allow for a maximum viewable map. You MUST ALLOW POPUPS for our application to function properly!

  • I get a popup alert when I started the application and it seems to be running a bit slow, what's up?
Like all applications, we occasionally need time to maintain the site.We need to update data and support documents on a regular basis. While we are maintaining the site, the data the application uses is still current, but utilizes the old shapefile (.shp) format. These files do not perform as well as our production database. We strive to keep maintenance to a minimum and generally only during off-peak hours.

  • I bookmarked GISWEB, but it doesn't work!
There are a number of files that must load into GISWEB. If you create your bookmark while in GISWEB, it likely won't work. For INTERNET users, the bookmarked URL must read http://www.gis.co.santa-cruz.ca.us/internet/wwwgisweb For INTRANET users, the bookmark must read http://gismap/GIS_Intranet/intranet/gisweb Internet Explorer allows you to edit bookmarks by right-clicking the bookmark, selecting 'PROPERTIES' and edit the URL.

  • What browser works best with GISWEB?
Our application has been tested extensively using Internet Explorer, ver 6. It was also tested primarily with the Google toolbar popup blocker. Other browsers and versions may (or may not) experience problems with our application.

  • Why does some of the data seem to disappear I turn on 'X' layer?
GISWEB was developed and tested to be easy to use. The application 'sees' data layers in a very specific order and draws it accordingly. You may discover certain layer combinations that 'hide' other data when the map draws.

  • What software was used to create this application?
GISWEB was programmed using ESRI's ArcIMS software.
